Produce and present special reports for the Dane County Criminal Justice Coordinating Council, who are interested in using the Measures for Justice to highlight racial disparities.
Dane had come to us for help. They know they have a problem with racial disparity. Groups like Black Lives Matter and Justified Anger are picketing outside the county court steps. However, Dane doesn’t know exactly where the racial disparity exists: it has no distilled data to share with the community to discuss the problem openly or to track progress and change. MFJ’s research and technology teams created an early version of the Prototype to display the Dane County results. We were able to show Dane which areas in its system suffer the most from racial disparity (answer: drug convictions), but also how the county is handling economic disparity (the indigent are twice as likely to be incarcerated for drugs). We also showed Dane that, although there are disparities, they are not the worst in the state as originally feared. As a result, Dane’s leaders have asked to use our Measures to address their needs and track their progress. This also allowed MFJ access to crucial early feedback on the design interface of the web tool.
