The Birmingham DRC began operating in December 2015. Due to various logistical concerns, there were delays in getting the center fully up and running. The DRC hosted an open house on Monday, March 21 and invited stakeholders and partner agencies to attend a presentation on the DRC, reentry, and a tour of the facility. After the tour, NRRC staff met with Lillian Callins, the GED instructor and later with Jeremy Ledlow (District Manager), Jo Wood (Chief Fiscal Officer), and Benita Daugharty (Project Director) to discuss implementation challenges, sustainability, and replication.
On March 22, NRRC staff met with DRC staff to discuss their perspectives on the project, where they see successes and challenges, and next steps. Primary areas of focus included barriers participants face such as transportation, housing, and literacy as well as trainings for staff, partnerships with other agencies, and buy-in from other BPP officers. Currently the project has 22 active participants include 3 that have moved to Phase 2.
