After attending the 4th Annual Tribal Healing to Wellness Courts Enhancement Training, the Gila River Family Healing to Wellness Court reached out to the Tribal Law and Policy Institute to request an onsite technical assistance visit. While the court is strong and confident in its structure, they note there is always room for improvement and would like recommendations for carrying the court forward.
TLPI and the Gila River Family Healing to Wellness Court Coordinator Yolanda Johnson conducted an initial conference call to discuss Gila River's goal for the onsite, what specific trainings they would like to receive, and what perceived weaknesses they are currently experiencing.
A second conference call was conducted with the Gila River THWC coordinator and judge, and TLPI consultants Charlene Jackson and Carrie Garrow. The agenda for the onsite was finalized.
The Gila River Family Healing to Wellness Court shared their intake form, recovery plan, children's code, and policies and procedures for consideration by the consultants in preparation for the onsite TA visit.
TLPI consultants Carrie Garrow and Charlene Jackson conducted the two-day onsite with the Gila River Family Healing to Wellness Court, which included observing their court hearing and staffing, and interviewing individual members of the Wellness Court team.
After initial drafts and edits, the Gila River Family Healing to Wellness Court Onsite TA Report was finalized and sent to the Court. Recommendation topics included education, drug testing, policy and procedure revisions, screening and assessment, the Family Drug Court team, treatment plans, assessment of children, and sanctions and incentives.
