Spoke with POC Sharon Shaver. Since they applied for the grant over a year ago, now there's some goals that have already progressed or been accomplished. They will be requesting a GAN. We have accomplished some of the goals already, but have also identified some other needs. First kickoff meeting with JDI and facility compliance mgrs is scheduled for 2/17/16. First plan of attack...get into the pilot site and ID where our training deficits are: staff as well as inmates. Culture still largest obstacle....need to develop training that is facility-specific; get rid of the us vs them mentality. On a side note, Ms. Shaver wants to initiate the advocacy piece and thinks it can be worked on at the same time. That is one focus. Then other is a better screening instrument; one more specific for female population. Been working with women's services already on that.
Other discussion had regarded the following: How do we identify LGBT people properly and identify those who may be at high risk (i.e. particularly if other factors on the screening do not elevate their risk). Discussed ID'ing LGBT; incorporating that into the screening process, which they want to enhance anyway. Screenings are categorized as: Potential Victim, Potential Aggressors, Known Victims, Known Aggressors. Ms. Shaver wants to know how many LGBT…that is not being collected at this time and cannot be aggregated. *Can programming be added to collect and then be able to pull LGBT data (like they currently can do with the Known Aggressors or Known Victims)??
TTA Coach researched screening resources and was able to secure Ms. Shaver a spot in a web meeting with previous grantees that was occurring. Screening experiences, implementations, and challenges is supposed to be one of the primary topics.
Ms. Shaver was ultimately not able to attend the web meeting.
TTA Coach had discussion with Sharon at the May PREA Auditor Training regarding barriers in grant progress.
