The PREA Coordinator and Just Detention International (JDI) are in communication with the wardens of the four selected facilities – Ridgeland, Kershaw, Leath and Turbeville. The evaluator will soon administer the climate survey to staff and inmates at the four pilot sites.

The PREA Coordinator and Just Detention International (JDI) visited the four pilot sites – Ridgeland, Kershaw, Leath and Turbeville. Mock audits were conducted by five certified SDOC auditors. Among the outcomes was evidence that night shifts were consistently short-staffed. Another significant matter was the realization that inmate risk assessments were not a factor when transferring inmates.
The PREA Coordinator reports strong support of the PREA project from the state attorney general’s office. The PREA Coordinator will visit all 22 institutions during fiscal year 2017 beginning in July.
