The Center for Court Innovation hosted, Community Justice 2016, an international summit on how to reduce crime and incarceration while improving public trust in justice. The three-day training was held in Chicago from April 13 to April 15, 2016.
This conference drew some 300 attendees from a wide range of practice areas, including judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, probation officers, court administrators and non-profit service providers. Topics included community engagement, jail reduction, risk/needs assessments, substance use and mental disorders, procedural justice and legitimacy, restorative justice, and young adult justice. The summary of evaluations gathered from participants shows that, on Day One, 97% of participants reported that they increased their knowledge, on Day Two, 96% of participants reported that they increased their knowledge, and on Day Three, 99% of participants reported that they increased their knowledge. Solicitations for bids were sent to hotels in Chicago, IL; Austin, TX; and Newark, NJ as the first step of the Community Justice 2016 planning process.
Bids from the three selected cities were processed, and Chicago was selected as the host city based on available bids within DOJ conference guidelines.
Discussions began with the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts on the possibility of a partnership for the Community Justice 2016 conference.
After timely submission by the Center for Court Innovation the conference proposal was approved by BJA.
Center staff selected topics for sessions, and potential speakers for the training in Chicago in consultation with BJA.
Center staff wrote and sent invitation letters to several key speakers, including Attorney General Loretta Lynch, and Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey.
The Center for Court Innovation finalized the agenda, coordinated logistics for faculty and attendees, and hosted Community Justice 2016, (an international summit on how to reduce crime and incarceration while improving public trust in justice.)
