The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office is requesting funding through the National Training and Technical Assistance Program for our community consortium concerned with heroin abuse and addiction. Since 2012 Jefferson County has seen over 150 heroin related deaths, which has resulted in a public health crisis for our community.
The goal of the community consortium, which is spearheaded by US Attorney Joyce Vance, is the development of a strategic community action plan to attack the prescription drug abuse and heroin epidemic in Jefferson County. The community will benefit from the development of this plan both through targeted education, and community involvement in the solution. We are requesting funding for phase two of the development of this strategic community action plan.
During phase two of the work we anticipate through the help of Clarus, creation of working groups charged with plan completion and initial implementation of each identified strategic priority area. In addition, should funding allow, we plan to have developed and implemented a community engagement strategy to share the outcomes of the strategic planning process with key stakeholders. Phase two will also include project management support for the collaborative effort to ensure sustainability of the project. Through process documentation and careful attention to communication we anticipate that this work will be able to serve as a model for future community response to emerging public health threats, positioning the Birmingham community to respond more quickly and efficiently in similar future efforts and capturing lessons learned to allow other communities to benefit as well.
