During the reporting period, the Washington Department of Corrections (WADOC) continued to work towards their goals under their FY 22 grant. Two positions that play a major role under this grant, the Gender Responsive Administrator and the Transgender Housing and Program Manager, were successfully filled with new full time staff members. The coaches are hopeful that with new staff in place to make housing determinations for the transgender population will meaningfully consider transfers to gender-affirming institutions. WADOC staff have continued to work on regular reports for Disability Rights Washington. Unfortunately, due to a WA state mandate for a temporary freeze on contracts, WADOC has been unable to move forward with working with Core Associates for their gender responsive staff training. WADOC is cautiously optimistic that this freeze will be lifted by March of 2025, but is still brainstorming alternative plans for use of their grant funds. Even with legislative and staffing shifts, WADOC continues to be on track for a successful completion of their grant.
