Description
This virtual, interactive, 4-session series will provide the foundations of restorative practices and a fundamental understanding of how to serve as a facilitator in basic restorative practices that include restorative conversations with criminal system clients and facilitating wellness, peacemaking and healing circles focused on harm repair and reintegration. In each 4 - hour session, participants will acquire knowledge, practice skills and receive interim assignments to supplement their learning. Each session will have 4 hours of lecture and interactive activities building the necessary skills participants will need to facilitate restorative practices. In addition, the week will have a discussion board where participants will be required to post responses to discussion questions and respond to fellow students, and instructors. The week will also include supplemental reading materials, videos, homework assignments and a knowledge quiz at the end of the training. Coaching/Mentoring will be available to participants for up to 90 days following the conclusion of the training to support their implementation and/or growth in facilitating restorative processes.
*Requires personal computer with video and audio capabilities as each participant will be interacting with other students virtually/face to face.
* Participants will be required to attend all sessions. The sessions will also be recorded and available to graduates following the training.
*All participants will have individual coaching time available during and following the course.
Session 1 Part 1 Foundations of RJP Values, Principles and Practices
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand roots and history of restorative justice practices (RJP).
2. Name key values and principles of RJP- 5 Rs.
3. Practice fundamental restorative process- Connection Circle.
4. Identify important facilitator skills and qualities.
5. Recognize benefits, contexts and spectrum of restorative practices.
6. Identify primary roles within various restorative processes.
Session 1 Part 2 (2.0 hours) Primary Facilitator Responsibilities
Learning Objectives:
1. Define victim-centered practice
2. Develop awareness and skills in working with trauma impacted participants
3. Consider contributing factors to offending behaviors
4. Build awareness of personal biases and how they may influence your work as a facilitator
5. Designing culturally appropriate processes
Session 2 Part 1 (2. hours) Preparing Harmed Parties for a Restorative Justice Process
Learning Objectives:
1. Articulate the primary goals or pre-conferencing and preparing all parties for RJP
2. Define and demonstrate active listening and other key facilitator skills
3. Demonstrate understanding of guide to pre-conferencing harmed parties
4. Assess harmed parties for readiness
Session 2 Part 2 (2. hours) Preparing Responsible Parties for a Restorative Justice Process
Learning Objectives:
1. Articulate the primary goals in pre-conferencing responsible parties
2. Define and demonstrate quality questioning to discern responsibility and intentions for repair
3. Demonstrate understanding of guide to pre-conferencing responsible parties
4. Assess responsible parties for readiness
5. Distinguish between facilitation, mediation and centering your voice vs. those of participants
Session 3, Part 1 (2.0 hours) Preparing Community Members and Support People for Participation and Getting Ready to Facilitate
Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the importance of pre-conferencing additional parties
2. Articulate clarity of understanding of all roles in a Community Group Conference model
3. Prepare a conference guide
4. Identify facilitations styles and how to work in co-facilitation model
5. Demonstrate tone setting and opening a RJP
Session 3 Part 2 (2.0 hours)

1. Elicit succinct stories and ensuring all voices are heard
2. Navigating challenging moments
3. Supporting clarifying questions vs interrogation
4. Recognize when it is time to transition and develop language to do it
Session 4 Part 1 (2. hours) Facilitation Practice (2)
Learning Objectives:
1. Building on strengths and assets
2. Demonstrate facilitation of brainstorming
3. Skillfully capturing the essentials of Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Restorative, Timely agreements
4. Define consensus and ensure all parties have reached consensus
5. Identify the potential for repair and reintegration- setting up monitoring and accountability.
Session 4 Part 2 (2.0 hours) Facilitation Practice (3) Victim Offender Dialogues
Learning Objectives:
1. Distinguish between CGC and VOD
2. Practicum- prepare all parties for VOD
3. Demonstrate Facilitation of VOD
4. Demonstrate self-awareness and shared responsibility as a facilitator.
5. Recognize when it is over and end well
