Title: Racial Equity in Police-led Deflection: Building Trust between Police and Community
Law enforcement across the country have led the development of deflection initiatives designed to reduce crime related to drug use. Recognizing that “we can’t arrest our way out of this,” deflection allows law enforcement to instead refer individuals to community-based treatment. Crime reduction efforts rely on high levels of trust between the police and the community, and deflection provides the opportunity to improve the relationships and trust that are often strained between minority communities and law enforcement. This moderated panel will discuss the newly defined four foundational elements of ensuring racial equity in deflection initiatives, developed collaboratively by TASC’s Center for Health and Justice and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) for the Department of Justice’s Comprehensive Opioid, Stimulant, and Substance Use Program (COSSUP).
Panelists:
Sergeant Natalie Hill, Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, South Carolina
Melissa Thompson, National Training and Program Manager, National Organization for Black Law Enforcement Executives
Dr. Kamaria A. Tyehimba, Vice President of Mental Health, Talbert House, Cincinnati, Ohio
Moderator: Mica Williams, Senior Program Manager, TASC’s Center for Health and Justice
