NCJTC has been participating in collaborative calls with IIR focused on increasing awareness of overdose fatality reviews (OFRs) among tribal communities and making connections with the Arizona Department of Health Services regarding the upcoming Arizona Tribal Opioid and Substance Use Summit. Based on these collaborative calls and the tribal opioid summit opportunity, NJCTC proposes providing faculty to co-present a panel session regarding OFRs and considerations for implementing OFRs in tribal communities or OFR partnerships with local, county and state-based OFRs. The overall event information and panel presentation proposal is outlined below. It is also proposed that additional local NCJTC staff participate in the event to help identify current needs and trends in the field, including promising approaches that can help inform future training and technical assistance sessions. Programs identified can potentially be leveraged as spotlight programs for TTA sessions, peer mentors, written resources, etc. This will also allow staff an opportunity to connect with Arizona grantees in attendance.

Overall Description: Tribal Opioid and Substance Use Summit

The 2024 Tribal Opioid Summit aims to convene individuals and organizations dedicated to supporting Arizona Tribes in addressing challenges related to opioid and substance use; including but not limited to treatment, prevention, and community-level support systems.

One of the primary goals is to create or enhance partnerships that enhance the provision of quality services across prevention, treatment, and ongoing care. This year's summit will feature four tracks: Prevention & Recovery, Clinical, Data, and Integration & Partnerships, with credit for Continuing Education Units (CEUs) available to attendees.

Panel Presentation Proposal: “Overdose Fatality Review: Partnership for Prevention”

Overdose Fatality Reviews (OFRs) are increasingly used by communities to address the overdose epidemic. These reviews analyze aggregate data and conduct confidential individual death reviews through a multidisciplinary team to improve coordination and collaboration across systems. This panel will explore how understanding the community context and the lived experiences of overdose victims can enhance collaboration and drive meaningful community change. It will also address the unique challenges and opportunities tribal communities face in OFRs, and how these insights can inform culturally tailored prevention strategies.
