It is estimated that over half of individuals who encounter the criminal justice system have experienced a brain injury, making this a highly prevalent concern among people in the criminal justice system and those working within the system. This session will review the recently released brief “Mind Matters: Building a Justice System That Is Inclusive and Responsive to Brain Injury” and provide key findings and recommendations for improving responses to people living with brain injury who encounter the justice system. Panelists will discuss what brain injury is, how it presents itself in the criminal justice system, and the key issues when identifying and addressing brain injury in a crisis response setting. Local experts, practitioners, law enforcement, and a person living with brain injury will also discuss training and how it can be applied in crisis and other justice settings.
