As first responders, police officers and their behavioral health partners regularly encounter individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Education and collaborative partnerships can enhance the safety and effectiveness of these encounters and help to build community trust. This session will focus on what officers and crisis response teams need to know about IDD and how they can form effective community partnerships with IDD advocates and organizations. Panelists will share highlights from their IDD outreach and engagement programs and discuss how to scale and adapt these programs to meet individual community needs. Presenters will share no cost resources from the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the BJA Crisis Response and Intervention Training (CRIT) Initiative.
