Presentation at the National Co-responder Alliance Conference 2024

Title: Connection through Deflection: Obtaining Buy-In and Engagement from Officers, Leaders, and the Community

There are six “pathways” or models of deflection, which is an upstream intervention for people with unmet behavioral health needs or who are suffering from homelessness or other quality of life issues. Deflection provides a mechanism to police and other first responders for keeping people out of the justice system or preventing the overutilization of emergency services, and instead connecting them to community-based treatment and services. Presenters in this session will provide information on the six pathways of deflection, how co-response fits into those pathways, and strategies for getting buy-in for co-responder programs from fellow first responder personnel and agency leaders. These strategies can also be adapted to gain support from local organizations or agencies that departments want to partner with on their co-response efforts.

Objectives:

Upon completion, attendees will be able to …

1. List three or more benefits of implementing deflection programs to address behavioral health and quality of life issues, including increased public safety, improved community-police relations, and better outcomes for individuals and families.
2. List the two pathways of deflection that incorporate co-response and differentiate between these two pathways.
3. List at least five strategies for obtaining officer buy-in for deflection and co-responder programs, and why that support is so critical to the success of these programs.

- Karen Maline, MS, Project Manager, Programs, International Association of Chiefs of Police
- Hope Fiori, MPPA, Director, National Deflection TA Center, TASC's Center for Health and Justice
