Steve DeBrota presented at USSS on the topic called, "“Reconsidering Famous Crimes: What if the JonBenet Ramsey Murder and O.J. Simpson case happened in 2023”. The presentation is described as, "Six-year-old JonBenet Ramsey was murdered in her Colorado home on Christmas Day in 1996. This presentation will first provide an overview of the publicly available evidence and identify investigative challenges with this unsolved case. Then the presenter, an experienced former federal prosecutor who was not involved in the investigation, will describe the present and emerging high technology and digital evidence that might be available if the same crime happened in 2023. The presentation is not intended to solve the Ramsey case, but rather to explore new ways to investigate and prosecute cases like it using a new functional approach to high technology, digital evidence, and criminal tradecraft. The presentation will discuss IoT evidence, DNA, open-source intelligence, smart homes, smartphones, geolocation, and other potential sources of evidence. The second part of the presentation will apply the same functional approach to understanding the potential role of wearable device evidence and vehicle telematics in the O.J. Simpson murder case if that crime happened in 2023.
Learning Objectives:
• Describe the present and emerging high technology and digital evidence that might be available if the same crime happened in 2023
• Explore new ways to investigate and prosecute cases using a new functional approach to high technology and digital evidence
• Consider cell phone tracking on airplanes, IoT evidence, DNA, open-source intelligence, smart homes, smartphones, geolocation, and other potential sources of evidence"
