Requestor was connected with CHJ by a EMS Chief in North Carolina. The request is below, emailed 12/12/23
"For some background I work in Tooele, UT as a Paramedic and Training Officer for Mountain West Ambulance. Our ambulance service provides 911 services for the majority of Tooele County, which is a rural area approximately 45 minutes from Salt Lake City. Like many rural counties across the country, our community has been disproportionally affected by the opioid crisis. In the last year we have begun to work with our community partners (including the Sheriff's Office, behavioral health partners, and public health) to find innovative solutions to combat the effects the opioid crisis has had on our community.
One of the programs we have identified that would be helpful is a community paramedicine program that would provide MAT services. We would also be serving other populations including high 911 utilizers and specific hospital discharges. I had the pleasure of going out to Stanly County a couple months ago and was able to ride along with them and see how it works in person. We are now at the point where we are trying to find some grant funding to get this program off the ground.
We are looking for grant funding and having some mentoring support as well."
CHJ met with requestor 1/9 to discuss her request further. Resources provided are detailed below:
recommendations from the call and some resources with you:
-emphasized the importance of building in a program coordinator role, who can be responsible for ensuring the connections for continued care and treatment are happening, and who can lead any committee meetings and work groups.
-Critical Elements of Successful First ResponderDiversion Programs - this article highlights core elements and best practices, including some more information on the critical role of a program coordinator.
-The USDA has untapped funding for rural areas for equipment and vehicles for repurposing – recommendation is to reach out to your regional USDA offices to see if they have resources available.
-More COSSUP funding usually comes out in March; federal funding requires a government entity to apply, so Hope suggests exploring the Health Department as a major partner and grant holder.
-You can find information on applying for funding, including example proposals, on the COSSUP resource site here.
-Here's the FY23 COSSUP Solicitation which might give you an idea of what to expect when the next round of funding comes out.
-We recommend signing up for the COSSUP listserv to receive information about webinars, newsletters, funding opportunities, and other announcements.

CHJ reached out in March and April and did not hear back from requestor, likely due to the staff shortages she reported. TA is closed.
