Webinar: Peacemaking in Tribal Communities: Role of Tribal Law Enforcement

The Tribal Law and Policy Institute (TLPI), along with our training and technical assistance partners - the Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI), and National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA) presented a webinar titled: Peacemaking in Tribal Communities: Role of Tribal Law Enforcement moderated by BJ Jones and Brian Kauffman.

This webinar was designed to assist tribal court and justice system planners to better understand the following: How tribal law enforcement officers have traditionally served as peacekeepers in tribal communities; How tribal communities are reviving peacekeeping practices.
Key Inclusion and Steps to planning a peacemaking; Examples of peacekeeping in tribal communities.
'FY 2023 Coordinated Tribal Assistance (CTAS) Purpose Area #3 Grantees were all invited, as well as the general public.

The webinar was presented by Chief Francis E. Bradley Sr. and moderated by BJ Jones and Brian Kauffman and was hosted by the Tribal Law and Policy Institute (TLPI), along with our training and technical assistance partners - the Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI), and National American Indian Court Judges Association (NAICJA).
Moderators were BJ Jones who serves as Executive Director for the Tribal Judicial Institute (TJI). BJ has more than 25 years experience as a tribal judge for various Tribes in the Northern Plains area. BJ has served in trial courts as well as courts of appeal throughout the region. BJ has been a long-time adjunct faculty member at UND School of Law and has taught courses such as Federal Indian Law, Criminal Law and Jurisdiction in Indian Country, and the Indian Child Welfare Act. BJ serves on the North Dakota Supreme Court's Tribal-State Judges' Committee.
The other moderator: Brian Kauffman, serves as the Executive Director of the Western Community Policing Institute (WCPI) a nationally recognized community policing and homeland security training institute. He has over twenty years in law enforcement and public safety serving in a variety of positions including patrol supervisor, tactical entry team member, police and corrections training expert and Lieutenant and Captain with Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). Brian has trained thousands of public safety and community representatives across the nation in police and homeland security topics. Brian received a Bachelor of Science degree in Management and Communication from Western Baptist College, and his Master’s degree in Adult Education and PhD in Educational Leadership from Oregon State University.
