The Commission is working with a range of surviving family members, friends and community members to document, investigate and look at possible reparations for the harm caused by racial terror and lynchings in Maryland. It is estimated that over 70% of adults in the U.S. have experienced some type of traumatic event. That is an estimated 223.4 million people. The estimated rates are even higher for African Americans. Historical trauma refers to populations that have been subjected to long-term, collective traumas. These traumatic experiences have been transmitted to subsequent generations. As we explore how to work with communities and address the harm they have experienced, it is critically important for professionals to have skills to recognize, understand and address historical and primary trauma. Without being trauma-informed, we miss a vital component of responsivity when attending to the needs of the individuals involved in addressing the work of the Commission.
Join us for a three-part series related to restorative justice practices. Each session will provide attendees with insights into trauma-responses, motivational interviewing techniques and the history, discuss key values and principles of restorative justice practices.
