Questions?

Submitted by Ms. Chantel Su… on

On 4/19/24 via Zoom TLPI met with staff at Winnemucca to review TTA Needs Assessment which was done on the call. In attendance were Judge Patricia Lenzi; Shannon Guerrero, Clerk; and Misty Rojo, grant representative.

To note: The Tribe had change in leadership very recently and still being worked through. The Chairperson changed and this also affected grant financial management: Eric Magiera should be authorized rep. There are two others that should be included in communications and Judge Lenzi will email contact information.

Needs Assessment Priorities:
Tribal Codes; Data Collection; Website/webpage assistance; Peer to Peer learning/sharing topic Judge Lenzi can share on discussed best practices for virtual hearings; Other needs: Biggest concern is security due to their prior courthouse was completely vandalized and burned.
Really need to get physical space in order and then get presence known to the community that the court exists and is a resource for finding self-help, get things resolved, etc. They want the public to know that the Judge and Shannon spend about 1-2 days a month there to work on things and get everything in order.

Grant questions: The Tribe did not accept the grant immediately, took some internal changes to get things in order but then accepted, think the funds are now available to the tribe. They had some questions that were discussed.

Relationship with legal aids in Nevada: May be one of the code issues that needs to be resolved, maybe need to create a Tribal bar but also want them to be Nevada barred.

Other TTA Need: Getting help with high conflict individuals; There are some good trainings on high conflict individuals and how to deescalate in court setting, person to person, counseling, tribal council.

Webinars and Podcasts: 1) Tribal Courts (Example: Development and implementation, enhancement of programs, Pro Se information) 2) Diversion from and alternatives to incarceration 3) Pretrial services (Example: Pretrial release options)

Publications: 1) Tribal Courts (Example: Development and implementation, enhancement of programs, Pro Se information) 2) Diversion from and alternatives to incarceration 3) Pretrial services (Example: Pretrial release options)
