Description
Description and objectives:
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a style of client-driven interaction that supports individuals in
log-term behavior change. Significant research in the health, education and criminal justice
fields supports the use of MI in addressing the needs of victim/survivors and offenders that
have engaged in criminal conduct and helping to facilitate change. MI is a trauma-informed
interviewing technique focusing on creating supportive, meaningful and strategic
conversations. This four-day training will prepare participants in providing practical skills to
engage in short and effective conversations to initiate, or facilitate, the process of behavior
change. Additional topics include: change talk, working with resistance, and exploring and
resolving ambivalence.
Training Objectives: At the conclusion of this training, attendees will walk away with:

• An understanding of trauma informed interactions
• An ability to elicit change talk and work through the four phases of MI
