On Thursday July 20, 2023, BJA and the CSG Justice Center convened a National Forecasting Group Meeting on the how courts are leading change at the intersection of behavioral health and criminal justice. The meeting set out to achieve the following goals:
Develop a nuanced picture of the types of court-focused projects and TTA JMHCP has supported, including the strategic value of the JMHCP investment and common challenges these projects have faced
Discuss priority areas for court-based programming, including competency to stand trial, case processing, connections to the civil system, diversion, and addressing inequities in dispositions across cases
Understand how federal funding and TTA can support court systems to better serve people with behavioral health needs involved with the court system and divert people with behavioral health needs from jail while supporting public safety and prioritizing equitable outcomes
The meeting brought together representatives from state, local, and regional jurisdictions: including Justice and Mental Health Collaboration Program grantees and law enforcement-mental health learning sites; national law enforcement groups; national affiliate groups; federal leaders; and criminal justice and behavioral health partners. The meeting’s agenda included discussions on court case processing, strengthening connections between courts and community-based providers, competency to stand trial, and common challenges for JMHCP grantees.
