Pilot Project:
In November, WADOC reported that they submitted the Grant Award Modification (GAM) to change the project scope on October 17; however, they have not yet heard anything regarding approval since submission. WADOC needs to change the scope due to the need for the Domestic Violence Court to be recognized as a specialized docket. WADOC reported that they are currently working with the Attorney General’s Office and advocacy groups to draft legislation to make it a specialized court. While WADOC is awaiting approval of the GAM, they have moved on to the second phase of the program. WADOC reports that the first community corrections officer hired to work on the program has an active caseload of nine, six of whom are still incarcerated and awaiting release. WADOC also reports that the three participants in the community are awaiting referral to have assessments completed by the partner provider. Currently, caseload numbers remain small, as the second community corrections officer hired on the grant is away completing their required DOC training. WADOC reports that the contracts are being finalized with Relationship Advantage who will be leading the DV groups, screenings, and assessments. WADOC also reports that they are still in discussions regarding the initial quote of $1,600 per participant in the program. WADOC is working with a partner to solidify a fee price for participants. Lastly, WADOC is actively seeking housing resources that might be necessary for the participants. They are working with the DOC housing specialist to select vendors that can provide housing, with the idea being that upon release, the program will pay for a participant’s housing on a short-term basis until the person finds employment.
Technology Tool:
In November, Recidiviz and CSG Justice Center staff had a call with WADOC to discuss a scope of work for Smart Supervision focused on providing data mining and machine learning technical support to allow WADOC to better utilize data in the free text fields of its databases. On 11/20, Recidiviz updated a senior policy advisor at BJA on the progress with WADOC. Recidiviz spent much of November scoping out the project internally and soliciting feedback on project elements from both CSG Justice Center and WADOC staff. Recidiviz anticipates hearing back from WADOC staff with additional feedback in early December.
