Pilot Project:
During the September monthly TTA call, Washington DOC staff relayed that the Spokane County DV court is still not up and running due to issues between the Attorney General’s Office and other legalities. These groups are still trying to overcome these obstacles, but there is no known timeline to start the court and have a docket ready. The Washington DOC team has two staff hired to supervise the DV specialty caseloads who are ready to start. Since WA DOC does not have the specialty docket started due to some constraints from the Attorney General’s Office, they cannot use the specialty docket to gain participants. They would like to gain participants through a regular probation caseload of people who are convicted of DV. CSG Justice Center staff counseled that the team should follow up with BJA to see if a Grant Award Modification (GAM) is needed, as the specialty docket was specifically mentioned in their grant application.
Additionally, CSG Justice Center staff reached out to BJA to understand whether a GAM must be completed for the shift from the DV court docket to using a DV caseload to find participants. No other aspects of the project would change. BJA advised DOC staff to email them directly about the issue.
Technology Tool (from Recidiviz):
In September, CSG Justice Center and Recidiviz staff discussed Washington State DOC’s proposal to use Smart Supervision to obtain additional technical staffing support for their research and data analytics unit. Recidiviz conducted internal conversations with the product, data analyst, and software engineering teams about DOC’s request for internal support.
