During this reporting period the Nevada Division of Child and Family services discussed the timeline for closing the grant on September 30, 2023. The team also discussed the possibility of obtaining an NCE. The coaches expressed concern about submitting a third NCE request due to the continued lack of progress on overall grant activities. The coaches also reviewed information provided by the agency for a borough-based confinement facility attached to a medical center and provided the agency with guidance. In May 2023, the agency conducted a four-hour refresher train the trainer course to identified uniform and non-uniform supervisory staff on the requirements of PREA including zero tolerance for sexual abuse/sexual harassment, identification of sexual abuse, prevention of sexual abuse, and response to incidents of sexual abuse.
Warden positions are now considered Assistant Commissioners so they can be civilians. Previously, wardens were promoted from within and came through the ranks. The Assistant Commissioner positions are met with some pushback from staff who preferred the previous path to the position. The agency requested an additional no-cost extension during this reporting period. Ultimately, the agency closed out the grant on 9/30/23.
