During this reporting period, JDI coaches were able to schedule check in with officials from the Michigan Department of Corrections at least once a month. Within the last couple of months, Michigan staff enrolled in the PREA Academy course. MDOC staff also had a meeting with their IT department, ADSS, to discuss updating current IT systems that would draw down on allocated grant funds. Unfortunately, ADSS is in the early stages of a complete agency-wide IT overhaul, which means that any updates to the existing system with grant funds would be short-lived. It was decided that this temporary fix was not the best use of grant funds, and there was no guarantee that ADSS could complete the updates in the time that remains on the grant. JDI coaches have also been working with MDOC on finalizing the information and accuracy of the contact information on their facilities' hotline posters, which included the creation of new numbers for making a report of sexual abuse/sexual harassment and to access confidential support. MDOC is entering the final quarter of their final grant extension. MDOC is planning for two regional trainings for their facility-based PREA staff. There have been ongoing delays obtaining approvals which may result in collapsing from two events down to one. Unfortunately, MDOC is struggling to spend all of its grant funds before the end of the grant period and will not meet all of their stated goals. MDOC continues to work on becoming PREA compliant and have been engaged with JDI coaches. MDOC closed out their grant with unexpended funds in September 2023.
