The forum serves to acknowledge and celebrate successes, exchange information, identify TTA needs, share resources and examine strategies to support your work as an Emmett Till Cold Case Investigations and Prosecution Program grantees. The monthly forum topics will be driven by you; Your knowledge, professional experience, and voice are vital to these conversations, and will be deeply appreciated by other grantees. As TTA providers, our role will primarily be to guide the process and provide input and resources as needed. Each monthly Community of Practice forum will highlight a topic area. The topics of conversation were previously identified through a poll that captured the needs and focus of the current Emmett Till Cold Case Investigations and Prosecution program grantees. Understanding and working with communities is key to any successful project. When service providers attempt to assist people in communities, but are met with a door in the face, or perceived hostility, it can be frustrating and confusing. This behavior might be labeled as “resistant”, when it is actually protective. Communities that have been traumatized, victimized and/or marginalized find it imperative to protect themselves from those who are perceived as a threat; even those trying to help. This training will help participants understand how traumatic events affect communities throughout generations. Participants will gain a deeper understanding on how groups based on racial identities, gender identities, sexual orientations or regional closeness can create shared ideals, values, fears and biases from a direct shared traumatic experience, intergenerational or collective trauma or through vicarious trauma. Participants will learn how to utilize a trauma conscious lens to effectively collaborate, communicate and support people within various communities. Participants will gain insight, understanding and tools on building safety and trust with communities that have felt the need to protect themselves from harm.
