Team walked through overview of TLPI, TLPI program, and introduced the Tribal Courts team, TTA process, how to request TTA, recent publications, reviewed the TAJI website and shared about the Tribal TTA partners and shared contact information. Each attendee shared top three goals or current issues being addressed as they start working on the grant projects.
Patricia Lenzi, Chief Judge, and Shannon Guerrero, Court Administrator attended for Winnemucca
They shared that currently they are trying to hold court regularly and establish that – once a month – for everything (animal control, civil, traffic, criminal, etc.) § Want court to earn recognition and respect of surrounding community – they didn’t even know who the tribal government was for the longest time and want them to understand that the tribe, government, and court does exist and earn their respect § Need to hire staff – a bailiff § Have joint funding with 638 funding · Need to furnish building a little bit more · Need to update Bench Book and Court Manual § Have never managed a grant and really need assistance on this end · The tribe has some staffing issues and is still trying to get past that hurdle in terms of finance and grant management · Never done the reporting so will need TTA around this · Assistance with the JustGrants system – very complicated and don’t want this to hinder tribe from getting the work done.
