Applicant Request: Modern policing has increased the need for efficiency and reliability in computers and equipment. As most requirements call for departments to be paperless, the technology of an in-car laptop is critical in investigations, gathering intelligence, and sharing information with surrounding agencies. The East Hazel Crest Police Department (EHCPD) has identified and acknowledged our department's necessity of updating laptops. If awarded, this grant request will immediately increase both the safety and efficiency of our law enforcement agency by fulfilling the need for new in-car laptops in each of our marked patrol vehicles. Being a smaller community and police department, the funding challenges of maintaining relevant and reliable equipment have proven hard to overcome with budgetary constraints. EHCPD meets the requirements of this application as our estimated population, sourced from Census.gov, lists that our 2019 estimate is 1,497. By not updating our current computer systems, we are being put in a position to use outdated, unreliable, and unsafe equipment. If these new laptops are not purchased, there is a possibility that crucial information will not be transferred; therefore, public and officer safety would be dramatically affected. This award would enable EHCPD to receive real-time information from our central dispatch center, as well as other intelligence centers through our mobile dispatching software (Spillman). With recent updates to Spillman, dispatchers have been able to share locations of incidents through the software on a map, communicate directly with officers via instant messaging, and sharing reports and information with neighboring agencies. EHCPD also utilizes in-car laptops for investigating and completing accident reports, enforcing traffic infractions to increase driver safety, and documenting incidents occurring in our jurisdiction.
