A data request was drafted related to the use of the Johnson County jail beds for non-jailable offenses. This data request will lead to the analysis of data to to examine the impact of booking and detaining defendants for non-jailable offenses.
Jesse Revicki of CJI has begun the process of data cleaning, data merging, and coding of new variables for the analysis of the Johnson County jail data to examine the impact on jail bed days for those booked on non-jailable offenses. The analysis will be completed in early May 2015 and the preliminary results will be shared with Johnson County, KS. This analysis is tied to the strategies that were identified in Phase 1 of the JRI work for Johnson County, KS and will hopefully result in a productive discussion related to potential policy and practice changes.
The analysis to examine the impact on jail bed days for those booked on non-jailable offenses was conducted and finalized in May, 2015. As a result of the analysis to examine the impact on jail bed days for those booked on non-jailable offenses, preliminary conversations with one local police department has focused on the use of a pretrial risk assessment instrument to be introduced at booking or even before booking.

The analysis to examine the impact on jail bed days for those booked on non-jailable offenses was conducted. The preliminary results were shared with Johnson County, KS. The results suggested that there are municipal police departments who are utlilizing jail bed days for infractions that would not result in a jail sentence. Discussions with police department contacts have begun to share this information and to identify next steps.
