In March, state engagement moved forward on several fronts. After several months of work, data was shared by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio in the jails sector, the 22nd Judicial Circuit Court in Missouri in the courts sector, and the Iowa State University Police Department in the law enforcement sector. The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office was the first agency to onboard in Ohio, and the call with the 22nd Judicial Circuit and the Iowa State University Police Department were part of a new effort to move data configuration and entry to earlier in the onboarding process. Staff from the CSG Justice Center and Recidiviz completed several onboarding sessions with agencies in Iowa, Ohio, and St. Louis including the first prosecution agency in Iowa, the Marion County Attorney’s Office.
In addition to onboarding, several agencies opted in to Justice Counts including Iowa’s Office of State Public Defender. Staff from the CSG Justice Center conducted recruitment and introductory calls with agencies in Iowa, Maine, New Mexico, Ohio, and Rhode Island. Additionally, staff from the CSG Justice Center met with Recidiviz and the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s Criminal Justice Services (OCJS) team to discuss their unique participation in Justice Counts as a superagency. They also worked with staff from Recidiviz to create a new kind of bulk upload template for Publisher that would allow state-level agencies such as OCJS to share data for some metrics on behalf of multiple local agencies. Progress was also made in Montana where the Justice Counts resolution passed unanimously out of committee.
Working toward Tier 2 metrics development, the Judicial Focus group met three times in March. The group of judges and court administrators provided extensive feedback on both Tier 1 and potential Tier 2 metrics. The meetings were also attended by staff from project partner the National Center for State Courts and supported by staff from Measures for Justice. CSG Justice Center staff also presented to members of project partner the National Criminal Justice Association during a monthly “Lunch and Learn” session. Additionally, CSG Justice Center staff also conducted monthly calls with other project partners to check in on deliverable progress and potential conference appearances.
CSG Justice Center staff from the Communications division completed the analytics for the release of the Technical Implementation Guides (TIGs) at the end of January and found that in the first month that the TIGs were live on the Justice Counts website, the website got 6,000 views, and the TIGs page got over 1,650 views. CSG Justice Center staff also took part in a presentation on criminal justice challenges, Justice Counts, Justice Reinvestment, and the Risk Guidelines project for federal employees and contractors.
CSG Justice Center staff participated in professional development work including a supervisor training “Managing to Change the World” by The Management Center as well as a team meeting in New York. At the team meeting, CSG Justice Center staff spent time thinking through long-term project plans and ways to improve the recruitment and onboarding process. It was the first time that the entire team met in person. Lastly, an offer was extended to a candidate for the open project manager position.
