The coordinators were assembled for an in-person meeting at the 2022 Statewide Problem-Solving Court Coordinators Roundtable on October 3 and 4. The two-day meeting, occurring in New York City, included presentations from fellow coordinators and subject matter experts and action planning breakout sessions. With over 25 coordinators in attendance, most of which were in-person, a few coordinators joined via video-conferencing platform, Zoom.
Day one of the roundtable included introductory remarks from the director of the Center for Court Innovation, Courtney Bryan; the statewide coordinating judge for problem-solving courts in New York State, Honorable Toko Serita; and federal officials from BJA including Karhlton Moore, Director, Elizabeth Griffith, Supervisory Program Manager, Karen Friedman, Director of Criminal Justice Innovation, Development, and Engagement; and policy advisors Gregory Torain and Courtney Stewart. The first panel of the day focused on statewide education strategies and featured current TTA projects in Oklahoma, New York, and South Dakota, delivered by each state’s respective statewide coordinator. The second panel covered sustainability, in particular rural drug court strategies, focused on the role of certification and fidelity and how high-performing drug courts serve as a roadmap to sustainability and overcoming barriers. The day also included two one-hour breakout sessions where coordinators engaged in action planning.
Day two of the roundtable began with a panel presentation of new research in the field. Co-directors of the NDCRC, Dr. Christina Lanier and Dr. Kristen DeVall, presented on the developments of the Painting the Current Picture and staff from the Center for Court Innovation presented on the Strengthening the Foundation Research Project and next steps in the project. The second presentation of the day, delivered by Cathy Assata, the Substance Use Disorders Department Director at the Center for Human Services, discussed creating safe and inclusive treatment courts for members of the LGBTQIA+ community. The last presentation of the day provided coordinators with information on how to engage their tribal jurisdictions. This presentation was delivered by Adelle Fontanet, Director of Tribal Justice Exchange at the Center; Melanie Fritzche, Senior Program Manager at the Center; and Precious Benally, Tribal Healing to Wellness Specialist at TLPI. Day two also ended with an action planning workshop and a facilitated discussion.
