CSG Justice Center staff traveled to Iowa to raise awareness and enthusiasm for the project. They held the following meetings:
o 10/11: Meeting with Beth Skinner (Director, Iowa Department of Corrections) and Sarah Fineran (Research Director, Iowa Department of Corrections) to discuss their support of Justice Counts in Iowa, identify the best pathway for DOC to share the data necessary for Justice Counts, and plan for additional stakeholder engagements in Iowa.
o 10/12: Meeting with Kurt Swaim (First Assistant State Public Defender, Office of the State Public Defender- OSPD) to discuss his support for Justice Counts in Iowa, how data are compiled and maintained by the OSPD, and his recommendations for other stakeholders with whom to connect.
o 10/12: Meeting with Erik Helland (Member, Iowa Public Employee Relations Board, former State Representative) to discuss Justice Counts in Iowa, better understand how data are currently used by the legislature and other state leaders, and get recommendations for other stakeholders with whom to connect.
o 10/12: Meeting with Steve Michael (Division Administrator), Mindi TenNapel (Research Director), and Laura Roeder-Grubb (Information Technology Specialist) with the Iowa Department of Human Rights’ Division of Criminal and Juvenile Justice Planning (CJJP) to discuss the division’s role in Justice Counts in Iowa, current data collection and analysis within CJJP, and how Justice Counts can potentially leverage data already flowing from local, county, or state agencies to/through CJJP.
o 10/12: Meeting with Tina Meth Farrington (County Attorney, Calhoun County) to discuss her interest in Justice Counts in Iowa, learn about how she and other county attorneys collect or share case information, and identify methods for engaging other County Attorneys in Iowa.
o 10/12: Meeting with John Haila (Mayor of Ames, Iowa) to address his questions about Justice Counts in Iowa. Mayor Haila is supportive of better data but pressed for how Justice Counts would effectively portray important context around the data and guide policymakers in a direction that improves public safety. Mayor Haila committed to connecting Justice Counts staff with other Mayors around the state and with Chief Geoff Huff from the Ames Police Department.
o 10/13: Meeting with Bruce Vander Sanden (Director, Judicial District Community-based Corrections) and the leadership team from the Judicial District Community-based Corrections agency. This agency supervises people on probation and parole in six counties in Eastern Iowa. Director Vander Sanden and his team were supportive of Justice Counts and committed to participating in the initiative as well as connecting Justice Counts staff with other District Directors in Iowa."
