APPA conducted a Workshop: Strategies for Improving State / Tribal Collaboration in Native American Reentry. The objectives of this Workshop were to provide a brief history of State/Tribal Collaborations from several different states including Minnesota, New Mexico, and Washington. This portion of the presentation highlighted the Leech Lake Band of Chippewa Indians Joint Jurisdiction Agreements with the State of Minnesota, the State of Washington Department of Corrections work with Tribes regarding Reentry services and, the Joint Powers Agreement between the Pueblo of Laguna and the New Mexico Department of Corrections for paroling individuals to the reservation.
The Workshop provided information on the need, benefits, and challenges associated with state/tribal collaborations. This section discussed why states and tribes need to collaborate, specifically is regards to Native Reentry.
The final portion of this workshop introduced the Reentry Toolkit created by APPA in partnership with CCI providing information on the planning process for establishing Reentry programs designed to improve the transition outcomes of Tribal members being released from Tribal, Local, State, and Federal Correctional Facilities.
