Workshop 1 (1.5 hours)
This workshop will provide an overview of key considerations in the safe and respectful management of incarcerated transgender individuals. The session will engage participants in a discussion of local lessons learned, successes, and barriers to implementing key best practice considerations. This workshop, building on collegial discussion, will support participants in identifying action steps to pursue upon return to their home agency to enhance safe and respectful management of incarcerated transgender individuals. Key considerations for discussion include, but may not be limited to:
? Training and definition of expectations for safe respectful behavior for staff and incarcerated individuals.
? Facility and housing placement.
? Operations: Intake and classification, searches, property, and identification.
? Programs and medical/mental health services.
Workshop 2 (1.5 hours)
This workshop will engage participants in a discussion to explore and define key components of an equitable, safe, and respectful culture for gender-diverse individuals and outline strategies for implementing sustainable change.
? Leadership strategies to include messaging, communication, and modeling.
? Preparation of staff for safe and respectful management of gender-diverse individuals.
? Preparation of incarcerated individuals for safe and respectful interactions with individuals regardless of gender-identity.
? Incorporation of respectful practices into policy.
? Normalization of new practice into best practice.
