The CJI team was involved in stakeholder engagement and relationship building throughout the state of Oklahoma, to build confidence, trust, and participation across the state of Oklahoma in the JRI phase 1 process. CJI met periodically with members of Governor Stitt’s office as well as other legislators to plan the JRI process; the Governor’s office issued a press release officially announcing the creation of the MODERN Justice Task Force on July 11th. CJI also met with sheriffs and jail administrators counties across the state to introduce the project and respond to any hesitation or skepticism regarding the project goals. In addition, CJI met with law enforcement officials, policy advocates, pretrial service providers, social service providers, judges, attorneys, and other system stakeholders in Oklahoma, Tulsa, Garfield, Woods, Comanche, Rogers, Sequoyah and Harmon counties. Upon request, CJI staff provided a high-level overview of the project to the Governor, legislators and staff from several criminal justice advocacy organizations at the Governor’s Policy Summit on August 2nd. This stakeholder engagement contributed to the development of champions who encouraged greater stakeholder buy-in during the system assessment and policy development phases of the project.
