At the end of August, CJI staff traveled to Santa Fe to facilitate the third of four total meetings scheduled as part of the SM6/HM11 Task Force Process. Meeting attendees included representatives of the New Mexico Association of Counties, the New Mexico Corrections Department, the New Mexico Administrative Office of the Courts, the New Mexico Sentencing Commission, and analysts from the Legislative Finance Committee. During the meeting, Task Force members continued discussions around the feasibility of unifying New Mexico’s prison and jail systems. The group identified a range of smaller system areas to target before attempting large structural changes like unification and began to develop recommendations for addressing such challenges. The final report of the Task Force, including these recommendations, is expected to be published and shared with the New Mexico Legislature in November 2022.
