Center staff Christopher Heinrich and Lindsey Price Jackson delivered a presentation at the National Association of Drug Court Professional's Annual Training Conference on July 25 - 28, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee. The presentation is titled "Treatment Responses Through a Community Justice Lens: Proportionate, Collaborative."
Community justice initiatives, including community courts and community-based diversion programs, respond to treatment needs along the spectrum of the criminal legal system. In the current landscape of jail reduction efforts coupled with changes in drug policies, community justice initiatives collaboratively problem-solve to create innovative responses to treatment needs, especially for low-level cases, together with criminal legal, treatment, and community stakeholders. This session covered a national scan of innovative community justice initiatives, with a focus on how programs engage community members and justice-involved participants through prevention, diversion, and alternative to incarceration programs. Many of these community justice initiatives offer innovative ways of addressing the opioid crisis through community outreach, education, and treatment interventions.
