Provide scholarship funding totaling $32, 000 to defense practitioners.
January-June 2022: Provided Scholarship funding for 15 attendees for the ABA-SCLAID virtual conference, April 21-22, 2022 that focused on managed assigned counsel programs. Total scholarship amount was $750.00.
July -December 2022: $3,896 to fund 5 public defense lawyers to attend NACDL’s Fall Meeting (Oct. 19-22) focusing on representing clients with serious mental health needs. Attorneys were from Puerto Rico, Nebraska, Florida, and Washington State. Funding included registration and travel expenses.
$3070 to fund 10 public defense lawyers and/or professional staff including mitigation experts and social workers to attend NAPD’s conference on Racial Justice in the criminal legal system. The program was held October 31-Nov. 4 in Montgomery, AL
$9500 to fund 3 lawyers to attend the National Criminal Defense College. This fully immersive, 2 week program, provides hands-on, skill-based training for defense lawyers at all levels of experience. Funding defrayed tuition and housing costs.
January - June 2023: Provided registrations for public defense providers to participate in programs from the National Association of Public Defense as follows (all programs completed between January and June 15, 2023)
• $3,070 for registration for 10 attendees of NAPD’s Racial Justice program (live) in Montgomery, AL October 31-Nov. 4, 2022 (note, the event was last reporting period, but we did not pay on the invoice until Feb 2023).
• $2,750 for registration for 5 attendees of NAPD’s Next Level Leadership program (virtual)
• $290 for registration for 2 attendees of NAPD’s Sustaining and Supporting Well-Being program (virtual)
• $1,020 for registration for 3 attendees of NAPD’s Mitigation from the Start program (virtual)
• $2,490 for registration for 17 attendees of NAPD’s We are the Defenders conference (virtual)
July-Dec. 2023: July 1-December 31, 2023: Total scholarships for training programs = $12,929 providing funds for registration and travel expenses.
Jan-June 2024: : We continue to award funds to enable public defense lawyers and staff to attend training. This reporting period we were able to provide funding for 2 attorneys to attend a highly specialized DNA training that would otherwise have been financially inaccessible to them. Providing scholarship support is an especially important way of providing assistance to experienced defenders who are seeking opportunities to develop advanced and often more nuanced or niche skills that they could not otherwise get through attending a general defender training program.
July-Dec. 2024: In the summer and fall of 2024 our scholarship funds were used to support attorneys attending programs including the National Criminal Defense College, We the Defenders, and the Team Mitigation Institute. $20,000 in scholarship funds were awarded.
