The Long Island Empowerment Cooperative (LIEC) has requested a 75-minute virtual, skillsbased training for advocates and SANE/SAFE nurses working with incarcerated survivors. The training will take place on September 20, 2022 from 6-8pm ET during a regularly scheduled member meeting. Based in Suffolk County, New York, LIEC seeks to provide information specific for advocates who will only accompany survivors through the forensic medical exam, as well as information for SANE/SAFE nurses to make sure they provide appropriate care to incarcerated survivors. JDI Deputy Executive Director Cynthia Totten and Program Director Kris Mady will facilitate the training for LIEC. Both Ms. Totten and Mx. Mady have expertise working with advocates and SANE/SAFE nurses, and Mx. Mady is highly experienced as an advocate working with incarcerated survivors. Ms. Totten and Mx. Mady will consult with LIEC as needed to ensure content meets the needs of intended participants. At a minimum, the presentation will include the following: a general understanding of PREA, the required care to survivors, working with survivors with serious mental illness, and chain of custody considerations when working with a jail. They will also weave survivor stories into the presentation to connect the topic with real people and will build in time for questions. Following the virtual training, Ms. Totten and Mx. Mady will provide up to three (3) technical assistance calls to support LIEC?s work to provide forensic exams inside the Suffolk County Jail.
