On June 8, 2022, CJI staff traveled to Sante Fe, New Mexico to support a Task Force in their discussions of consolidating New Mexico's criminal justice system by regionalizing jails, unifying the prison and jail system, or exploring other approaches to improving efficiencies and collaborations with criminal justice system partners. Members of this Task Force include representatives of the New Mexico County Association, the New Mexico Correctional Department, the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Sentencing Commission, as well as some local county managers and jail administrators. CJI's support at this meeting (and throughout this effort) is to assist a Task Force that was created as part of a legislative mandate in reviewing the possibility of regionalizing or unifying parts of the state's criminal justice system. CJI presented a PowerPoint including a summary of feedback that was provided by the Task Force at the April 13th meeting, findings from a survey that was requested by the Task Force and distributed to NM county jail managers and administrators, and additional information on other states with unified and/or regionalized criminal justice systems. CJI then led a small and large group discussion with members of the task force to help the group identify a shared vision for their ideal criminal justice system and develop a path forward to making that vision a reality. The intended impact of this meeting was to have the Task Force build upon the robust conversation they started in April, and move closer to being able to make recommendations for system improvements. This meeting was the second of several that will take place during the summer and fall months of 2022. At the end of this Task Force process, recommendations will be developed and presented to the Legislature.
