On April 13th, 2022, CJI staff traveled to Sante Fe, New Mexico to support a Task Force in their discussions of consolidating New Mexico's criminal justice system by regionalizing jails, unifying the prison and jail system, or exploring other approaches to improving system efficiencies and outcomes. Members of this Task Force include representatives of the New Mexico County Association, the New Mexico Correctional Department, the Administrative Office of the Courts, the Sentencing Commission, as well as some local county managers and jail administrators. For this TTA, the expectation was for CJI to present a PowerPoint including background on the Memorial legislation that created this Task Force and identified the need for a study on regionalization and unification, an overview of the structure of New Mexico's system, and information on states that have regionalized or unified their systems. CJI then facilitated a group discussion with the Task Force members about challenges and opportunities in New Mexico. The intended impact of this meeting was to have the Task Force meet in person for the first time and initiate a robust conversation around regionalization and unification in the state. This meeting was the first of several that will take place during the summer and fall months of 2022. At the end of this Task Force process, recommendations will be developed and presented to the Legislature.
