This was the third session of the community of practice: Behavioral Health Criminal Case Processing:Exploring Person-Centered Justice in the Courts. This community of practice is being coordinated with the National Center for State Courts. The learning objectives of this session,Implementing Data-Driven Policy Changes, on August 12, 2021, were to have participants identify all possible state and local resources and data to implement data-driven policy change, share progress about their team's TA plans, and understand basic formulas for analyzing individual case costs. The session began with a presentation from Scott Patterson, the StatewideBehavioral Health Manager,Administrative Office of theNew Mexico Courts, who discussed using state and local resources and data to implement data-driven policy changes. Each participating team then discussed the progress on their data driven policy change related to improving case processing for people with behavioral health needs. Many of the participating teams are focusing on attempting to improve and streamline the competency process, referrals to community based treatment, information sharing, the creation of a mental health court docket, etc. Richard Schwermer from NCSC then facilitated a discussion about case costs as a way to incentivize improved case processing and treatment options for people with behavioral health needs.
