This was the first session of the community of practice: Behavioral Health Criminal Case Processing:Exploring Person-Centered Justice in the Courts. This community of practice is being coordinated with the National Center for State Courts. The learning objectives of this session, Concepts and Strategies of Person-Centered Case Management Across the CriminalJustice System, on July 15, 2021, were to have participants understand concepts and strategies of person-centered case management across the criminaljustice system intercepts; identify the main challenges to improving caseflow management for people with behavioralhealth needs; and determine what types of data are needed to improve caseflow processing for people withbehavioral health needs and determine who has access to that data. The session began with team introductions from the participating sites (Clatsop County, OR, Chelsea, MA, Fairfield County, OH, and the 8th Judicial District of New Mexico). Chief Justice Carey of Massachustes then provided an overview of the National Judicial Task Force to Examine State Courts' Response to Mental Illness. Patti Tobias from NCSC presented information about A New Model for Collaborative Court and Community Caseflow Management. The participants then worked in team breakout groups to discuss their team goals for the learning community and identify a data-driven policy change related to improved case processing for people with behavioral health needs. The session concluded with a brief presentation about strategies to improve court data collection and analysis. The participants were also informed about the upcoming 1:1 TA opportunities as part of this community of practice.
