The Fairfax County Police Department has an Overdose Investigation Unit that focuses exclusively on investigating overdoses. There's a law enforcement agency in Florida that has a similar unit. We are seeking information on other law enforcement agencies that have a unit/team that only focuses on overdoses. If there are other agencies with such a unit, we would like the following information: structure; number of staff and type (detectives, analysts, etc.); business process for responding/investigating overdoses; and, whether the unit investigates all known overdoses (fatal and non-fatal) or prioritizes, and if the latter, the criteria used to prioritize.
I am seeking information on law enforcement programs that provide some type of support to family/friends who have lost a loved one to a fatal overdose during the immediate period following the overdose. This could be part of a victim services unit, co-responder program, overdose investigation unit, or something else. For each program, it would be helpful to know the jurisdiction type/size, program model, funding source/level, outcome/output data, participating agencies/organizations. Thanks in advance and please contact me if any further information is needed.
On 9.1.21, CHJ held an introductory call with Fairfax County to discuss OFRs, opioid investigation, and victim support. CHJ met with IIR's OFR team for more information, and is working to schedule a follow up with Fairfax.
