Examine common issues faced by law enforcement and service providers when encountering a person in crisis. Review methods to prevent or intervene in a crisis situation in which mental illness is a factor, including de-escalation and communication techniques. Identify presenting symptoms of various types of mental health disorders. Explore intervention strategies and methods for assessing the presence of suicidal intention. Discuss the lifelong impact that trauma has on individuals such as veterans, children, domestic violence survivors, and individuals impacted by historical trauma.

Upon completion, participants will be able to:
-Recite the basic sub-types of mental health disorders.
-Identify typical presenting symptoms of anxiety disorders, depression, mania, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorders, and schizophrenia spectrum disorders.
-Develop basic intervention and diversion strategies for people experiencing panic, anxiety or suicidal behaviors.
-Explain the impact of police intervention in the lives of mental health consumers.
-Cite characteristic symptoms of excited delirium, a medical crisis in which accounts for numerous in-custody deaths, and differentiating factors from a mental health crisis.
-Examine the lifelong impact trauma has on health and well being for veterans and individuals who have experienced childhood trauma, domestic or sexual abuse, and survived natural disasters.
-Deploy communication techniques to de-escalate a situation in which an individual is experiencing a mental health emergency.
