School threat assessment is a leading strategy for preventing school violence nationwide. This learning community will focus on developing expertise in school threat assessment and is aimed primarily at those who are in the beginning stages of establishing threat assessment teams in their school/district. Participants will begin with the topics of team selection and training, then choose among topics such as objectivity and bias in the threat assessment process; student rights, fairness, and equity in school discipline when using threat assessment; the role of law enforcement; coordination with special education; sustainability of threat assessment plans; and records and information sharing.
The goal of this learning community is to engage a group of professionals in meaningful peer-to-peer learning. This process will include sharing successes and barriers as well as building capacity to implement and evaluate threat assessment programs. The community will draw upon a team of threat assessment experts and resources from the National Center for School Safety.
