Ft. Lauderdale informed the SL that the 140 cases that were sent to BODE have been processed and their local crime laboratory have completed their technical review. All the cases that had CODIS eligible DNA have been entered by PBSO, now FLPD is waiting on possible hits. Over the life of the grant, they've received several DNA hits and have re-opened 29 cases for review. Some were closed again because they already had the suspect’s info or the victim does not wish to proceed. Currently, they have one case that we presented to the State for case filing consideration and two others that they are hoping to send soon. Sgt. Martinez started a draft of the victim notification policy, but it is not ready for presentation to the chain for command for approval yet. They are anticipating eight (8) more DNA hits from the last batch that PBSO reviewed.
Sgt. Martinez let the SL know that the FCASV (Florida Counsel Against Sexual Violence) is recommending the tracking of kits. However, that may take a while so they are trying to move forward with SAMS. He learned that Miami PD is also using SAMS now and they use the same evidence tracking system FLPD use (File on Q), so they can learn from them. They have been in contact with Portland and IT is working with them. Legal is reviewing the AIG for city approval. Their biggest challenge for ViCAP has been training PSA Kasaundra Pabon who is the person designated to do that.
SL connected Ft. Lauderdale to Ilse Knecht with the Joyful Heart Foundation to discuss considerations for evidence tracking systems.
Emailed site to check-in on their progress and to ask if there are any training and technical assistance needs that they have currently. I also asked if they had any site successes to share.
Emailed site for monthly check in. They let me know that they needed to remove one of their SAKs from their inventory because they realized it was a duplicate.
