The Tribal Healing to Wellness Court Enhancement Training is the preeminent national training opportunity for tribal problem-solving courts. Like national and regional drug court trainings, the Wellness Court Enhancement Training is oriented around the ten key components and the National Association of Drug Court Professionals (NADCP) National Drug Court Standards. Unlike non-tribal trainings, however, the Enhancement Training focuses upon tribal issues, including jurisdictional and legal issues unique to Indian country; the incorporation of custom and tradition into the phases, case management, treatment curriculums, and tangential services; and the peer-to-peer sharing of successful Healing to Wellness Courts models in operations.
The Tribal Law and Policy Institute coordinated the 10th Annual Healing to Wellness Court Enhancement Training, held from September 28 to October 2, 2020. Each of the five days consisted of 2 – 3 workshop blocks with 1-2 workshops occurring in each block, for a total of 23 workshops. Training topics included adult healing to wellness courts, juvenile wellness courts, veteran treatment courts and law enforcement related matters. A total of 640 individuals from over 100 tribal, state, and other treatment court practitioner fields registered. The training was delivered completely virtually due to pandemic related travel restrictions and safety concerns. Evaluations were completed at the end of every workshop as well as an overall evaluation.
185 participants completed the overall training evaluation, which was administered completely online, via Survey Monkey. A total of 12 questions measured participants experience at training, utilizing ranking scales, multiple choice and open ended questions. Respondents were asked if they learned at least one new skill and 96% said yes. Respondents were asked if they would attend this training again and 99% said yes. Respondents were also asked to measure their increase in knowledge and the usefulness of the training and whether the training increased knowledge and skills. The weighted average of these responses was 4.5 reflecting strong utility and educational value for attendees working in the field of treatment courts in tribal communities. The virtual format allowed for the largest attendance numbers in the history of the event. Based on the success of the virtual format, TLPI will continue to provide virtual attendance options for future in-person events.
Despite unprecedented, pandemic related challenges, virtual TA activities during this reporting period were a resounding success, and we are eager to continue the work this year!
