Milestone Description

Chris sent a check-in email to follow up on a request from BJA regarding issues that grantees may or may not be experiencing with ViCAP and to confirm that SAKI TTA has the main ViCAP POC for the site on file. Chris also inquired about serial offenders that the site may have identified as well as a summarization of efforts or success stories.

Chris also checked in to provide Lt. Whiddon with details on the RAINN training concepts and let Lt. Whiddon know that we would follow up with more details once they are available.

Other Relevant Information

Lt. Whiddon confirmed their ViCAP POC and stated that they do not have any issues with ViCAP at this time. He sent along a great list of serial offenders.

Lt. Whiddon also gave updates on a few items stating that they are working on an extension on their FY2018 award, they are almost ready to send out the RFP for genealogy testing on their FY2020 award, and that they are still very interested in the trauma-informed training with RAINN, but the scheduling piece may be complicated for a little bit longer.

Milestone Description

Chris and Pattie Melton held a check-in call with Lt. Whiddon and had a great discussion. Lt. Whiddon was excited to share that they recently obtained their first SAKI conviction via trail. The offender was convicted on 9 counts (kidnapping and rape) and linked to 4 separate SAKI cases. He reflected that the process was a total team effort and that he was very pleased with how well everyone worked together.

Lt. mentioned that they have been hosting MDT meetings virtually, but he is looking forward to hosting the next one in person to review the recent trial and investigation to evaluate their processes.

Lt. mentioned they have obtained separate funding for genealogy testing and will be working with a laboratory called "Advanced DNA" to do so.

Chris thanked Lt. for the involvement of his team members in the April SAKI webinar/discussion panel on virtual victim engagement and interactions. Lt. said his team thought the event went very well and they were happy to participate.

Chris followed up with Lt. Whiddon on the trauma-informed practices TA event opportunity with RAINN and Lt. mentioned that the timing is just not right for them right now. He mentioned that they would love to see recordings or access materials on their own time if they become available from the Cleveland TA event. Chris concurred.

Other Relevant Information

Chris will follow up on the RAINN TA event after the Cleveland event is hosted and recordings are available. Chris will also make an introduction to the Texas DPS team since they are also using "Advanced DNA" for genealogy testing.
