Deliver TA
Milestone Description

Chris and Kayleigh connected via phone to check in on the status of ABQ's SAKI project.

Kayleigh mentioned that she will no longer be in the site coordinator position and that Valerie Lucero, a colleague at APD will be the new site coordinator. Kayleigh will still be on the project, but not as intimately involved as before.

The ABQ cold case subaward, awarded by RTI(SAKI TTA), is still in the beginning phases because of the legal troubles with accepting their FY2019 SAKI award. Kayleigh anticipates this to be resolved soon.

She mentioned that their SAKI cases are moving nicely, but they have a horrible time obtaining convictions because of the death of a SANE nurse that collected over 2/3 of their 5,000+ SAKs. She is unable to testify, and therefore, judges are not allowing SAKs into cases as evidence. Chris will work with AEquitas to see if they can be of assistance here.

Milestone Title
Follow-up on tasks or next steps
Milestone Description

Chris sent a check-in email to Valerie Lucero (new site coordinator) to check-in and see how things are going and to offer a call with Valerie if she would like one.

Chris also wanted to follow up on a request from BJA regarding issues that grantees may or may not be experiencing with ViCAP and to confirm that SAKI TTA has the main ViCAP POC for the site on file. Chris also inquired about serial offenders that the site may have identified as well as a summarization of efforts or success stories.

Other Relevant Information

Valerie responded to Chris confirming their ViCAP POCs and stating that the learning curve with ViCAP and limitations on case information is their biggest holdup to date.

Valerie also mentioned that they have had over 170 SAKI cases linked to serial offenders and nearly 100 of them have moved forward to the DA's office at this time.

Follow-up on tasks or next steps
Milestone Description

Chris held a phone call with Valerie Lucero to talk through the project in general, the role of TTA (Chris/SAKI TTA) and what we can do to help them out. Chris and Valerie has some great discussion about trainings and conferences that SAKI TTA will be hosting in the near future, virtual TTA that is available on demand, and "by request" TTA that Valerie can reach out to Chris for.

Since Valerie has been placed as a new POC, but has been a liaison for law enforcement on the project since it began in 2017, this call was more of a refresher to get her up to speed on TTA's role and the status of their project.

Valerie noted that the Albuquerque project is going well and they are working on some serial offender cases. They have been holding MDT meetings virtually over the last year.

Follow-up on tasks or next steps
Milestone Description

Chris held a great check-in call with Valerie Lucero-Fernandez, Carey Hendricks, and Pattie Melton. Albuquerque stated that things are going well but they are in a little bit of an "in between" phase right now since they have received all of their DNA testing results, but are now shifting into heavy investigations. They have over 700 CODIS hits, so it will all take some time.

They had great feedback for the Assembly of Cities and were excited to see some of the information about civilian involvement on the project since they have some civilians working on SAKI. Valerie also got some useful information from the first site coordinator working group about the PMT since she has just recently started working on PMT for the first time.

They are working on serial offender cases and collaborating with the DA's office to put resources together on these types of cases. They recently started sharing SAMS data with the DA's office as well, making case information sharing easier and more efficient.

They do not have any specific TTA needs at this time other than getting some resources together for new detectives regarding sexual assault investigations.

Other Relevant Information

Chris will put together some investigation resources for the new detectives and send to Valerie. Chris will also work with Valerie to add representatives from the Other Violent Cold Case Crimes subaward to the next check in phone call.
